Good afternoon and welcome to our coverage of the 2018 AWCON Group A match between the Black Queens of Ghana and the Les Aigles Femelles of Mali. The Black Queens are on the verge of sealing a semifinal spot after winning their opening game against Algeria. A win today will propel Queens to the next stage of the tournament and put them in good standing for a world cup slot.
All is set at the Accra International Trade Fair Centre here in the capital as the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are set to decide on National Executives who will steer the affairs of the party from the year 2020 and beyond. The importance of this Delegates’ congress cannot be overemphasized as the party hopes the new crop of executives will lead the team to oust the incumbent party. Chairman of the Planning Committee Alex Segbefia confidently asserted that by the time the new executives are ready to go through another delegates elections, the NDC will be the government in power. About 15,000 people, made up of 9,350 delegates and 5,650 observers, are expected to throng the premise to decide the fate of the 65 candidates vying for various positions. So far, the race for the National Chairman and the General Secretary seem to be the one generate most interest among the citizenry. Perhaps the most revered and favourite politician of Ghanaians, Johnson Asiedu Nketia is for the first time in a long time facing stiff opposition from his second in command, Koku Anyidoho who has vowed to unseat his boss as the General Secretary in this keen contest. For the position of the National Chairman, five stalwarts of the party are vying. They are a former Trade and Industry Minister and former NDC MP for Keta, Mr Dan Abodakpi; the party’s former Director of Elections, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; a former Attorney General and current Vice-Chairperson, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu; a businessman, Mr Daniel Anang, and Alhaji Huudu Yahaya. The incumbent, Kofi Portuphy however decided to sit this one out by not seeking re-election. Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is today fulfilling his constitutional mandate of presenting the government's budget statement in parliament. The budget statement which is the third of the Akufo-Addo administration is expected to address very pertinent issues that has arisen over the course of time. The government's first ever budget, christened 'Asempa budget' read in March 2017 brought to life the flagship policy, Free SHS and the abolishing of taxes termed 'nuisance tax' The second, 'Adwuma budget' read in November 2017 promised to bring about jobs and economic prosperity for Ghanaians. This brought in its wake the NaBCo programme where 100, 000 graduates are to be given 3-year employment under 7 modules. Over the two-year period the government has been in power, it has touted its management of the economy especially improving the macroeconomic indicators. Despite its much celebrated feat, many businesses complain about harsh economic times, increasing taxes especially at the ports, increase in fuel prices and for much of the year a depreciating cedi against the dollar. Civil society Organisations have advised government to prioritise some key sectors. IMANI for instance has tasked government to focus on clearing the exergy sector debts. Akufo-Addo has hinted that the 2019 budget will bring hope to Ghanaians. The minority though believe there will be more hardship as they predict new taxes and cut in expenditure.
