BURTON Albion can secure promotion to the Championship with a point in Sunday’s trip to Doncaster Rovers (12.30pm). The Brewers have a three-point advantage over third-placed Walsall heading into the final day of the regular League One season, meaning a draw would be enough to see Nigel Clough’s men playing in the second tier of English football next season. To make sure of that, they will have to overcome the challenge posed by Rovers, who need a win and results elsewhere to go their way to have any chance of avoiding relegation. You can follow all the action this weekend with the Burton Mail. We will have all the build-up ahead of the crucial match at the Keepmoat, before coverage of all the key action from the game.
TODAY could prove a vital day in the history of Burton Albion - and the Brewers aren't even playing. Walsall take on Fleetwood Town at the Banks's Stadium and the result there could see Albion win promotion to the Championship for the first time - in their first ever League One season. Nigel Clough's side gave their automatic promotion hopes a major shot in the arm with the latest of 2-1 victories over Gillingham on Saturday - Tom Naylor heading home the winner in the 92nd minute. It put them six points clear of the Saddlers, who have two games to play. It means that Walsall need to win today in order to take the promotion race to the final day - next Sunday sees Albion away at Doncaster Rovers. But should Fleetwood, fighting to avoid relegation, take a point or three from the Banks's Stadium, Albion can celebrate. Kick-off is at 12.15pm and we will know around 2pm whether Albion are promoted, or whether they must wait for the final day. We will have a live blog running throughout the day, focusing on events at the Banks's Stadium, and we want you to get involved. Leave your comments at the bottom of the page, tweet us @AshWilkinsonBM, @JoshuaMurrayBM and @BurtonMailSport and post on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BurtonSport). Get involved - and let's see whether the Brewers can make history today, or whether they must try to do so against Doncaster on Sunday.
BURTON Albion's final three games of the season begin this weekend - and they have so much left to play for this term. The Brewers currently sit second in the League One table - three points behind league leaders Wigan Athletic but three clear of Walsall in third. The Saddlers have a game in hand and face a tough trip to Bradford City this weekend, before playing that game against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday. Wigan, meanwhile, are up against Southend United this weekend. All three are pushing for automatic promotion to the Championship - Albion for the first time. This weekend could be a crucial one in determining who gets the top two spots. The Brewers travel to Colchester United, determined to take a win after six games without maximum points. It is a long trip to the Weston Homes Community Stadium and if you can't make the match, you can follow all the build-up and all the match action with the SportMail live blog.
THIS is it - the big game has arrived. With a full card of League One fixtures this evening, most eyes will be glued to the Pirelli Stadium where Wigan Athletic are hosting Burton Albion. For the Brewers, they will be looking to pick up their first win in six games while Wigan will want to put the memory of their 3-1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday - their first in 21 games - firmly behind them. Adding to the intrigue is the clash being a "first versus second" encounter, with Nigel Clough's Brewers sitting three points behind Gary Caldwell's league leaders. It promises to be a fascinating game - one which both sides need to win for different reasons, not least with Walsall just three points off the automatics and breathing down Albion's necks.
