Het peloton in de Tour de France begint vandaag aan de eerste van in totaal vier etappes door de Alpen. Om 12.00 uur gaan de renners vanuit Bern op weg voor een rit van 184,5 kilometer met vier beklimmingen. Het parcours van de zeventiende etappe leidt na een rustige aanloop over twee beklimmingen van de derde categorie, met in de finale nog de Col de la Forclaz (eerste categorie) en de klim van de buitencategorie naar het Zwitserse bergdorp Finhaut-Emosson waar op 1960 meter hoogte de finishlijn is getrokken. De aankomst van de winnaar wordt omstreeks 17.20 uur verwacht.
